Fire Comcast, Direct TV, or DISH Network!

Are you tired of paying for TV, DVR, PVR, on-demand, TiVo, etc.? So am I! One of my resolutions this year is to find ways to reduce spending. I mean, we are all complaining that the government is spending too much. I should do my part too. So I have been looking for ways to cut costs. While doing my research, I found a way that I can get rid of the TV (in terms of broadcasting expenses) and substitute it with something else. So what is it?

Introducing Boxee! What a great application. How much does it cost you ask? Your email. Meaning, you simply need to sign up for an account; that’s all! The application is completely free and it will run on Windows, Mac, or Linux. This review covers the Mac distro… since I love my Mac!

What Do I Get

Boxee is beautiful! Not only do you get the latest TV series, but you also get content not available to standard television. For example, Revision 3 has many shows that provide great content. HD Nation for example talks about all things HD. It’s a half hour show that will stream right through Boxee.

What’s the Catch

There are a few things to be aware of. Some of the content contains commercials and you cannot skip through them like you can with DVR or TiVo. Also, it doesn’t appear to be HD streaming. I could be wrong on this, but from everything I have seen, the picture is not AS clear as an HD broadcast would be. But hey, who can complain when it’s free?

Conclusion

I find it interesting that the television started out as pictures being broadcast over the air waves. The freedom you have to get reception any where. Then we went to the cable era. You can get way more channels by subscribing to cable, including movies! Then to the satellite, yet another wireless solution providing not only a large selection, but global channels as well. And now Internet streaming, yet another wired solution with unlimited options ahead. It makes me wonder what will come next? If we follow the pattern of history, it should be a streaming wireless solution. Maybe 200 mile range blue tooth connections?

You might ask if I have shut off my DISH Network subscription. Not yet. But I am seriously considering it. I hardly watch TV anymore anyway. Besides, with the Internet around, TV seems like such a waste of time. It is only one way communication. At least on the Internet, the communication is both directions. That is if anyone is reading this.
